Program: SAM Aphasia Program

Organization: Good Shepherd Centres
Description of Services: In-person and virtual social, recreational, and therapeutic activities for people with aphasia (communication difficulties related to a brain injury or stroke) * services include:
  • supported conversation groups
  • noon meal
  • assistance with personal care including medications
  • assistance with transportation
  • caregiver support
  • aphasia education and partner training
  • ongoing social worker access

Services provided by speech language pathologists, communication disorder assistants, social workers, trained staff, and volunteers

Maintenance level of rehabilitative care for patients working to prevent functional decline/injury or maintain functional performance

Eligibility - Population(s) Served: Adults 18 years and older who have an acquired communication disorder such as aphasia, apraxia of speech, and/or dysarthria due to stroke, brain injury, or brain illness * must be medically stable and live in the community * must have completed or nearly completed a publicly-funded speech language therapy program * must be willing to participate in supportive conversation groups to improve communication * must be able to participate in a group setting
